We have a bit more of an urban feel with this week’s post of local Miami celebrity and MTV‘s “El Headliner” winner –Tayno! His new single titled “Passion” features romantic Reggaeton duo Jayma & Dalex blending their romance with the “sexy” sound Tayno is known for. The song has some serious potential in the Miami club scene where people are still very much into Reggaeton and it also makes a hell of a song to jam to while on the road, windows down of course, in the true Miami fashion.

The entire presence of the song will make you feel like you’re in the video shoot for it, so you probably shouldn’t listen to it at work, you’re coworkers might find it disturbing that you’re grinding up on their cubicle. Fast & Furious Showdown features a wide range of levels that include such locations as Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Rio de Janeiro, and Mexico.  The composers carefully selected artists that fit the environment of each level, so the end result features songs by Maria Isa in Rio and Mexico, with local hiphop artists Emazin and Impirio & Cru (among others) dropping tracks on the Los Angeles level.  It’s exciting to see local talent featured on a such a large release, so check out our behind-the-scenes video to learn more about the project and Maria’s “Latinization EP.”

Local artist Niko Eme kicked off the night with his mambo favorites “Traicionera” and Hasta Que Exploten.”  His youthful energy and ability to engage the crowd during his short interludes was an exciting sign of promise for his future.  Although the English dance album has been put on hold, Niko predicts that he’ll be performing at a wide variety of local venues this summer.

Toby Love’s performance had about half of the audience packed tight against the stage while the rest danced along in the back of the room.  From classics such as “Tengo Un Amor” to new releases “Lejos” and “Todo Mi Amor Eres Tu” (I Just Can’t Stop Loving You), Toby crooned into the microphone with the finesse of a 70s soul singer.  As his back-up dancer twirled around on-stage. Toby walked the edge to establish a personal connection with his fans, even shaking hands throughout the set.  As I was leaving the venue, I glanced back to see Toby exchanging words and taking pictures with his fans.  That’s class.

Nothing excites me more than “discovering” a talented new artist!  While it’s easy to follow the latest releases of my favorite artists through social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube), the addition of a brand new artist to my iTunes library tends to be more rewarding.  Perhaps it’s the inspiration that these new talents exude as they tirelessly pursue their dreams and passion.  Nearly every artist evolves throughout the course of their career and I find it most meaningful when I can accompany them on this journey from an early stage.

I’m the type of girl who likes to match my daily playlist to my current mood.  My favorite genres are Latin tropical, alternative, dance, and pop.  I have mostly found new music and discovered new artists through word of mouth recommendations by friends.  I also check out regional blogs and follow regional radio stations such as those from my birth city of LA, where they often highlight or feature music by their local artists.  These outlets are wonderful because I feel that listeners receive a more personal insight from the music of local artists.

I live for the discovery of new music!  New alternative music tends to be more difficult to find, while the mainstream sounds have a shorter life cycle on my iPod.  When you combine that with the fact that I need new artists for this music blog, it’s accurate to say that I’m keeping my eye out for new music most nights of the week.

The truth of the blogosphere is that there are not very many Latin music websites or blogs at this time and those of us that do exist have different focuses.  For example, Club Fonograma and Remezcla Music are two excellent sources for Latin Alternative music, but they are in different languages, despite both being written from the U.S.  World Latin Star is a very solid blog with Latin Tropical and Urban releases, but they also have New York-centric Hip-Hop content and “Honeys” (models) that you won’t find on Spanglish Noise.  Real Talk Reggaeton was the best website for reggaeton (*gasp!), but have been under maintenance mode for a longtime now and have since been replaced by hordes of ad-ridden websites that offer pirated music with little support for the artists (the only such site I frequent is FlowHot).  If I want to find music, these websites are my first stop.

My other sources for new music include social media (especially Twitter and my YouTube subscriptions), word of mouth, and the less common advantage of having some artists directly submit their music through email.  If you’re really having trouble, you can also look to see if there are any less-familiar names who were featured on the albums of your favorite artists.  If all of that effort isn’t for you, my recommendation is to follow Spanglish Noise and check out the Latin CDs at Target (the selection is good!).
