DA!-DDY! … YAN!-KEE!… If you’ve never heard those words, then you have been missing out on a popular player in the modern Latin music scene. Daddy Yankee (ne Ramon Ayala) is a singer/rapper from Puerto Rico, perhaps best known for his 2005 single “Gasolina,” which crossed over into the mainstream and even made it’s way onto major music outlets such as MTV and numerous Top 40 radio stations. However, don’t let that one song define your vision of Daddy Yankee – he was around long before “Gasolina” and continues to produce hit after hit in the Latin Music scene.
His newest single at the moment, which is currently a hit in the clubs, is the electro-mambo song “Lovumba.” While the track has been out for a while now, the music video just dropped last week and I am sure that it will continue to generate radio play in the months leading up to the release of his next album Prestige. For those of you wondering what “Lovumba” means, it is a made-up word that fuses “love” with “rumba.” In other words, he is referring to the ability to dance, mixing a passion for love and music. Enjoy.
